J. K. Rowling - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Sun, Jun 18, 2000; by Oliver Breidenbach.

Harry wakes up one morning to learn that instead to the local middle school, he will be off to Hogwarts, elite school for wizards and witches. On his way he learns that he already is famous for beating the blackest wizards of all times shortly after having been born.

From then on his life turns upside down and he is off to a rollercoaster ride boarding on platform 9 3/4 at King¥s Cross station. A secret world reveals itself to him, hiding from the ordinary people, filled with powerful beasts, wizards and witches.

A truly charming read.

The only shadow is cast by Ms. Rowlings desire to pull ever more strange things out of the hat. Just like Piers Anthony who seems to suffer from the fear of becoming boring without a new magic widget appearing every 5 pages. Harry Potters story would be a catch even without centaurs, goblin and other fantasy series staff making an obligatory appearance.
